Sovereign Bancorp's principal business consists of attracting deposits from its network of community banking offices and originating small business and middle-market commercial loans, home equity lines of credit, residential mortgage loans, and auto and other consumer loans. The company also purchases portfolios of residential mortgage loans and other consumer loans originated throughout the U.S. The Bank operates more than 650 community-banking offices and over 1,000 automated teller machines located primarily in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Connecticut, New York, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Delaware and Maryland.
