HCC operates mostly in the United States, the United Kingdom, Spain, Bermuda and Ireland. The company underwrites insurance both on a direct basis, where it insures a risk in exchange for a premium, and on a reinsurance basis, where the company insures all or a portion of another insurance company's risk in exchange for all or a portion of the premium. HCC markets its products both directly to customers and through a network of independent brokers and producers, and affiliated agents. HCC's insurance companies focus their underwriting activities on providing insurance and/or reinsurance in lines of business, which includes Group life, accident and health, Diversified financial products, London market account, Aviation and Other specialty lines.
