GATX specializes in railcar, locomotive, commercial aircraft, marine vessel and other targeted equipment leasing. GATX operates through three business divisions: GATX Rail, GATX Air and GATX Specialty Finance. Rail primarily provides full-service leases, under which it maintains the railcars, pays ad valorem taxes and provides other supplementary services. Air is primarily engaged in leasing narrowbody aircraft that are used by commercial airlines throughout the world. Specialty consists of the former specialty finance and venture finance business units. GATX also owns and operates a fleet of self-loading vessels on the Great Lakes through its wholly owned subsidiary American Steamship Company. In June 2004, GATX completed the sale of GATX Technology Services and its Canadian affiliate. In December 2004, Rail acquired the remaining interest in Locomotive Leasing Partners from the Electro-Motive Division of GM (General Motors).
