CVS Corporation is engaged in the retail drugstore industry in the United States with operations in 36 states and Washington, D.C. CVS Corporation sells prescription drugs and a variety of general merchandise, including over-the-counter drugs, greeting cards, film and photo finishing services, beauty products and cosmetics, seasonal merchandise and convenience foods through its CVS/pharmacy retail stores. CVS' operations are grouped into two units: Retail Pharmacy and Pharmacy Benefit Management. During the fiscal year ended January 1, 2005, the Company filled over 366 million prescriptions. In July 2004, CVS acquired J.C. Penney's Eckerd drugstore chain of approximately 1,260 Eckerd drug stores, located mainly in the southern United States. CVS also acquired Eckerd Health Services, which includes Eckerd's mail order and pharmacy benefits management businesses, along with three Eckerd distribution centers.
