Burlington Northern Santa Fe Corporation is engaged in
the rail transportation business primarily in North
America through its subsidiaries. BNSF’s principal operating
subsidiary is BNSF Railway. As of December 31, 2004, BNSF Railway operates
over a railroad system consisting of approximately 32,000 route miles of
track (excluding second, third and fourth main tracks, yard tracks and
sidings), approximately 24,000 miles of which are owned route miles,
including easements, in 28 states and two Canadian provinces. BNSF Railway
also operates various facilities and equipment to support its transportation
system, including its infrastructure and locomotives and freight cars. It
also owns or leases other equipment to support rail operations, including
highway trailers, containers and vehicles.
